Ana-Marija was one of my very first online clients, and the first international client I've had the privilege to design for. And I really mean it when I say it's been a privilege. Ana-Marija opened her own restaurant in Dubrovnik, Croatia (Pantarul), has written and published an amazing cook book (What's Cooking in Dubrovnik), and her food blog, Da mi je nešto slatko… (If I had something sweet…) has won awards as the best Croatian food blog. And then... she called on me to help her design her brand for her English blog.
Ana-Marija taught me so much about a world I barely knew existed. She taught me about Dubrovnik, Croatia—the walled city on the Adriatic Sea, full of history, amazing architecture, centuries of tradition, and apparently—delicious food! Here are some images of Dubrovnik from her Instagram just to give you a taste of its beauty:
The challenge was to have the design of Ana-Marija's brand capture those unique characteristics of Dubrovnik. So we went with a Rosetta shape since it's so prominent in the architecture of Dubrovnik, and paired it with a hand-rendered font of her name. Originally we stuck with an all grayscale palette, letting the beauty of her photos bring all of the color. But with Dubrovnik being so rich in color, we later introduced a color palette that plays off of its very walls. With hand-drawn icons to bring a personal, authentic feel to her blog, we created a brand together that truly represents what Ana-Marija does and the beautiful city in which she lives.
I'll also admit that all of this has made me want to someday take a trip to Dubrovnik... and when I do, I look forward to meeting Ana-Marija. It's been an amazing opportunity for me to get to work with her.
"At first I wasn't sure if choosing someone from the other end of the world was going to work for my location-specific project, but as soon as I got down to business with Melody, I knew I'd made the right choice.
She is professional and friendly at the same time, willing to take into account all the input her clients provide her with and very thorough, all of which I appreciate in people I work with. She took the time to develop several concepts before we finally agreed on the best one, provided me with sound advice and was very patient with all the changes in the course of our project.
Melody also responded in a very timely way and I am very happy to have had the opportunity to work with her."
