National Poetry Month—Tiffany Trivett

For the grand finale of National Poetry Month, I'm so excited to share with you a very special poet today: Tiffany Trivett. I feel so honored to be able to feature her inspiring words—is it strange that I just keep reading them over and over, letting them sink in a little deeper each time? I usually get butterflies when I see her new work posted on Instagram, and I'm so thrilled that today, her words get to be on my blog.

THE COLOR OF LIGHT + TIME

Oh,

I imagine time

TN Trivett Poetry

tasting of poppyseed and flora,

moving

fast,

and slow

TN Trivett Poetry

like trails of weightless dust

disappearing

and reappearing;

strands of mineral light,

streaming through

the time-traveler's scope

TN Trivett Poetry

a sea enchantment

of abyssal sound.

oh,

spacious dark.

TN Trivett

You say

we are too eager for the future.

Ink blots swimming

across the atlantic,

searching for whales.

Ruminating,

wild in the eyes

and wilted in violet.

TN Trivett Poetry

But I found dip-dyed courage

at the bottom of a dream.

Starlit black,

return again.

Move slow.

I want you to see me.

TN Trivett Poetry

Sea mother;

crash over me

and make my body new.

TN Trivett Poetry

Then ask,

What is freedom for?

The way the body sways,

light in her lining.

Pyramids of indigo,

towers of water.

TN Trivett Poetry

Oh, I imagine time

smelling of walnut

and lemonade.

TN Trivett Poetry

Ask,

What is freedom for?

Ancient poetry;

her waking wilderness.

The way ice feels

cold

on my tongue

in August.

TN Trivett Poetry

And what of time?

TN Trivett Poetry

Oh, there is peace here.

She moves in circles,

and births me

over and over again

from her gold-glittered womb.

Oh, I imagine time

may  be

what freedom is for.
