Finicky Friday- Change

Finicky Friday- Change

Today I was faced with a healthy dose of reality.

I've disappeared this past month again, and not for entirely unjustifiable reasons. Work has picked up, and as I balance life, my 9 to 5, and my side hustle, blogging takes the brunt of it. It's the easiest to forget, to shove off, and to push aside for other "more important" things.

This past week, I filled out my editorial calendar diligently and got really excited for the blog posts that are happening this month.

Now for honesty:

I sat in front of my computer, one of my favorite topics before me, and I had nothing to write.

National Poetry Month — join in!

National Poetry Month — join in!

Being that I have so many writers dropping in on my site, and have some extremely talented clients whose writings I adore, I thought I’d invite some of you poetic writers to get in on the fun!

If you would like to have your poetry featured in the month of April right here on my blog, check out the details here and then send me a message letting me know! I know, I know… I probably should have started this process back in March. But who knew that April was National Poetry Month? (Probably most of you, I get it.) Depending on the type of response I receive, I’d love to feature two poets each week.

Beyond the month of April, I’ll also be looking at doing weekly writer interviews. So let me know if you’d be interested in that as well!

Finicky Designs

First of all, I just want to send a HUGE thanks to everyone who showed their faces on New Years Day to support me! You all mean the world to me, and while my online presence is just getting started (I've only been around online since the end of October 2014), I've already reaped so many rewards from it and met so many amazing people. So, thank you!

Yesterday was spent hustling in the morning to release my new eBook, get together my design giveaway, and edit mine and my friend's vlog like crazy! It was a whirlwind of a day! But I also took the time look at my business, where I've come from, how far I've gone, and what is in store for me (and you) in the future. So here's the blog post summing all of that up (or anyways most of it)...

As a small business owner, you have SO MUCH to worry about. And putting certain areas of your business in the trusted hands of others is crucial to your success. If you don’t know how the process with your designer should work, you’re only going to be stressed and worried throughout the entire design development. And please hear me—this should be the FUN part! This is where your dreams finally get a face to them, where your visual identity just begins. I don’t want the fun to be steam-rolled by the confusion.

This eBook is an informative guide that equips you before you start working with your designer so that you know exactly what to expect. You shouldn’t be kept in the dark when it comes to important design decisions having to do with your business.

My goal with this eBook is to create a detailed, helpful guide for my clients, small business owners, and other creative individuals seeking out a good, comprehensive explanation of the start to finish of design work and what you can expect out of it. Hopefully this helps put your mind at ease when your designer says “I’ll get to work,” helps you anticipate what comes next, and will also help you gauge whether or not you’re working with the right creative individual to help accomplish your goals.

Let me say this again—the design process is meant to be FUN and exciting. Hopefully this guide gives you that peace of mind to be able to enjoy it. So dive in, learn a lot, and overcome your fears with the power of what you’re about to learn!

ATTENTION DESIGNERS!

Want to provide this guide to your clients before you begin work with them? I will be altering this eBook for YOU to be able to use and redistribute to your clients, no strings attached! This new version will be available for purchase within the next few weeks and will be announced in a blog post. So be on the lookout for it!

Read it and love it? Have any constructive feedback? I'd love to hear from you, so please send me a quick note!

FINICKY DESIGNS- Who am I?

Welcome to my site! Let me introduce myself and tell you a little bit about me and what makes me tick.

My name is Melody and I live in Colorado. Let me stop there for a moment. Colorado. Have you ever been to Colorado? It's pretty epic. I mean, I'm from California, went to school in Florida, definitely a beach lover. But this land-locked girl couldn't be happier with the view that's out her back window.

Anyways, I'm Melody and I live in Colorado. I have an awesome husband, have two (completely adorable) dogs, and love God. I like photography, hiking, camping, painting, sewing... I'm kind of all over the map when it comes to hobbies. I'm guilty of thinking that relaxing is equivalent to being lazy (don't judge, I'm trying to get better about it). I work fulltime as an in-house designer for a non-profit organization that helps children in poverty. This is who I go to work for every day, my sponsored child, Lenhle. She is how I know what I do matters.

Then I come home every night and work with local businesses to develop their image. I LOVE THIS. I love grabbing a cup of coffee and talking big visions, big dreams, and big ideas. My clients never cease to amaze me, and I always feel privileged that they let me be a part of their business journey.

So, what's up with my site and why should you stick around?

First off, I'm doing a business re-launch on January 1st, 2015! I'm totally going to get promotional items printed, and blow up giant green balloons, and probably make myself a cake with my logo on it. Then I'm going to party online and send out some design freebies to all of my followers (yep, that's you). More on that later, but here are some other reasons why you should stick around:

  • If you take any interest in design, fun trends, and interesting color palettes, you'll find my monthly newsletter pretty cool. This will launch officially the beginning of January and will come with a freebie. So make sure you sign up!
  • Included in the newsletter will be a featured blog post, but if you want to receive every blog post in your inbox, make sure to subscribe via email (in the sidebar to the right). Blog posts will generally be about the graphic design industry with tips and tricks for both designers and small businesses. I'll also write about interesting personal experiences, aesthetically appealing design, and also share with you some of my favorite photos.
  • If you've stumbled across this site in search of a graphic designer, check out my portfolio as well as the design packages I offer. If you like what you see, head on over to my project request page to schedule a complimentary consult to talk about your business and your big vision for it.
  • If you're a designer and want to network with me, feel free to send me a hello. I love making new friends, and sharing our experiences with each other is often critical to a successful design business!

To read a little bit more about my background, visit my me page. Hope to see you around often!
